The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Herman Mashaba met the media on Wednesday 24 April to announce the R200 billion investments that would be realised in the next two to three years. It is the vision of #BuildingNewJozi and #TurningtheCityIntoAConstructionSite. This would address the affordable housing requirement, create 10 000 jobs and provide artisans with support needed to develop various skills related to the industry. This artisan support programme is in conjunction with the University of Johannesburg.

There are 24 RFPs that have be awarded for the Inner City Properties in areas including; Berea, Yeoville, City and Surburbia, Vrededorp and Marshalltown. The conditions of appointment are firmly managed insisting that the awarded company should deliver on the signing of the contract or risk forfeiting the appointment to the successive qualifying company

On Monday when the Executive Mayor meets the developers there will be fact sheets shared on the work that is proposed to ensure delivery and what can be expected. A slide show of the proposed developments will be available on this site on Monday afternoon.

All these premises are available through long-term leases. The City of Johannesburg has availed the land, Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA), Trust for Urban Housing Finance (TUHF) and the private sector have all made funds available to the twentyfour successful companies. All these companies are South African and two have very strong female leadership – one female led and one a strong women leadership in their joint venture.

The Executive Mayor, thanked Ms Helen Botes, the CEO of Joburg Property Company for the dedicated team that she put to this project to ensure that the award happened soon after the tender closed on February 28, 2019. Ms Helen Botes told the audience that the submissions made were of a very high quality and the competition was very good. There were 171 tender submissions.
