Through the realisation of his vision communicated in December 2016, Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor, Councillor Herman Mashaba continues to “break ground” in Joburg’s Inner City, stimulating investor appetite and the City’s redevelopment.

In response to the 171 submissions closed out at the end of February, the City of Joburg Property Company has awarded 24 tenders to successful property developers and investors. Turning the City Into a Construction Site over the next two to three years will see the rise of a new City of Joburg and what’s been tipped as Joburg’s second gold rush – restoring the City to its former glory.

Where the City’s interest are to see various mixed-use developments that predominantly address affordable, sustainable accommodation, the allocated properties are zoned in categories that include student accommodation, residential, industrial, business and public open space.

Ranging in size from 178m2 to 14 732m2 the various properties awarded are located throughout neighbourhoods including Berea, City and Suburban, Jeppestown, Johannesburg Central, Marshalltown, Turfontein, Vrededorp, and Yeoville

Also sensitive to fostering a culture of skills transfer, the development of local SMMEs and addressing domestic unemployment rates, the successful investors and developers are mandated in the submissions criteria to hire local suppliers and service providers.

Through creating this urban construction site, the City will create 5000 temporary jobs during the construction phase through the land released to the developers, subcontracting to SMMEs. A number of SMMEs will benefit economically in rejuvenating the properties and in opportunities to enter the property space through ownership and long term leases.

The City will provide an enabling environment to assist developers to achieve their objectives and the City’s development goals. The properties released are in line with the Inner City Road map, this map is planned for the following factors in the property market:

  • Sustainable Human Settlement
  • Economic Growth
  • Sustainable Service Delivery

In congratulating the successful companies the Executive Mayor has shared the list of recipients that have committed to work diligently to turn the Inner City into a construction site.

Other benefits that will result from the up and coming inner city developments include various training and skills development that will be facilitated through an artisan programme. A percentage of the total construction value will be reserved for the training and development.

Clean and safe city precincts, a cleaner and safer city where residents can make a living. The City will be dealing with the challenges of derelict buildings by ensuring that illegal activities are rooted out and buildings are managed by bona fide owners.

Ms Helen Botes, the CEO of the Joburg Property Company has explained that the City has availed the land and the private sector has made finances available to bring these plans to life. On Thursday 25 April, 70 more parcels of land were advertised on www.jhbproperty.co.za.
