Leave a legacy at the country’s leading & iconic Council Chamber

Joburg Property Company (JPC), an agency of the City of Joburg (CoJ), is calling on all Gauteng artists to submit sculpted wooden totems for consideration as permanent fixtures inside the new Council Chamber that is currently under construction in Braamfontein.

To pay homage to our own, the COJ’s new Council Chamber is African inspired and every element of it was purposefully designed with symbolic meaning in mind. The Chamber is creatively modelled on the design of the African drum and the circular Lekgotla concept. The majestic bronze-finned Chamber structure, with its golden tower that reaches tall into the Johannesburg sky is poised to become a definitive landmark in the city’s centre. It also showcases the COJ’s efforts and aspirations to become a world-class city that is united, transformed and progressive.

Submissions for totems are now officially open and will expire on 17 June 2016, 12pm. At the end of the period, the work of one artist from each community or ward that forms part of the CoJ’s municipal regions will be selected, to ensure that all of them are emblematically represented within the new Chamber. This equates to a total of 164 totems that will be installed onto the mullions between the planes of glass that surround the Chamber. To stand a chance to be selected, artists are encouraged to base their designs on the overarching theme of warmth and inclusivity at the new Chamber. Most importantly, their totems need to embody the distinctive story of the inhabitants of the communities they stand for.

Artists who wish to submit may go to www.jhbproperty.co.za or contact byeni@jhbproperty.co.za for more information.
